”I think everybody has ups and downs. Everybody has their good days and bad days and we all have that little voice in our head — or maybe I’m just talking about myself! Maybe I have voices in my head and everybody else doesn’t, but you have qualities and tendencies that probably are a little bit masochistic. We all do things or say things to ourselves that aren’t healthy. Maybe we’re hard on our body image or maybe we’re self-sabotagers or maybe we’re doing something wrong, and then we have our good days, or up side. So I think the album shows both sides of that. I am in a happy place right now, I’m excited to be working and making music, I’m excited to be in a relationship, but I think in the past, I dug into moments that were lonely and I didn’t have a great track record when it came to dating. I wasn’t very successful. I kept going after the wrong kind of people and so I wrote about that on the album.” -Adam Lambert
“What I’m trying to give to the listener are things to inspire them and strength and pride and confidence and fun. What I love about it is I think all those songs, whether upbeat or the darker ones, reflect the human experience and what we go through as people. The back half of the album, what I’m trying to connect there is, ‘Hey, look, I go through all this shit and I can still be fierce and I can still be strong, but yes, I go through things and I have my doubts and I have my issues.’ I hope the listener can say, ‘So do I, me too.’” -Adam Lambert
“Broken English is kind of a sexy song about communication. And there’s so many different ways to communicate. You can communicate with words, and then sometimes it’s not about the words at all, it’s about, maybe, body language. I think there can be some challenges that come with not being able to communicate verbally. And then there’s also a lot of beauty in that disconnect. And that’s what Broken English is about.” -Adam Lambert
“When I started the writing process, my first instinct was to kind of go a little bit darker- I was feeling a bit dark at the time. And my first album was very glam rock, and there were a couple darker songs; but all the imagery, my tour, and everything was lots of feathers and glitter and I kind of wanted to purposefully go in a different direction. So I started writing some kind of moody/emo stuff and working with a couple people, and they were good songs, but I would sit there and listen to them after we were done with demos and play them for friends and it just wasn’t clicking. So then I realized I want dance, I want funk, disco. I was listening to a Daft Punk song and I’m like ‘That’s everything!’ That’s electro! It’s modern but it’s borrowing from dance classics and I wanna figure out how to fuse that for me. And I talked to the label about it and that’s when they suggested Pharrell! And I was like ‘Yeah, if HE’LL work with me!’ I mean, of course I’ll work with him! We got the green light, I flew to Miami, and I’ve told this story a lot but, I didn’t feel cool enough to walk into the studio. I was pretty intimidated, I was like ‘It’s frickin Pharrell!’ I’m such a fan, and he’s shaped pop music and hip hop over the past decade like crazy. And I did’t know if he was gonna be into what I did… I was like ‘Okay, here we go!’ We started talking about life and music and the industry and being different and having to march forward strongly in spite of certain obstacles, and that’s how the song “Trespassing” was born.” - Adam Lambert
