“I think speaking of community- that’s one the main things I like to write about, that I like to cultivate with my fandom. Ya know, a lot of them meet each other and become friends at these concerts. So to me, that’s been the biggest inspiration in what music I wanted to put out there: music that brings people together, music that allows people to see how they’re the same instead of how they’re different, and music that breathes tolerance and celebration and doesn’t shy away from the eccentricities and the things that make us weird and strange, but instead- celebrating them. That’s really important to me.” -Adam Lambert

“I think one of the things that’s always a challenge for me personally, is to turn my brain off. I think a lot. I’m always thinking, thinking, thinking. One of the keys to really being in the right fame of mind for singing, is to not think so much. So I guess it’s really not a frame of mind, but it’s a frame of spirit and heart and soul. It’s trying to kind of detach from all the inner voices that go on in your head and your conscience and your self-awareness. It’s just tuning into the music. And there’s a peace in that. There’s a real peace in that detachment from all the noise. And now I sound crazy, but it’s really true. It’s the one time where you can go with the flow and be in the moment, that’s what music’s about.” -Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert article in this week’s OZ’s WHO magazine:

Soundtrack To My Life…
Adam Lambert

The 2009 American Idol runner-up and electro-pop rocker, 30, who has released his second album, Trespassing, talks about the songs that have shaped him.

The first song I was obsessed with:
Madonna’s “Vogue” was the biggie for me. I loved how provocative, outspoken and controversial she was. I thought that was fabulous.

My karaoke go-to track:
“Tell Me Something Good” by Rufus and Chaka Khan. For a while there, I loved karaoke. It actually got me over a little bit of stage fright when I was 23, 24.

My guilty pleasure track:
Actually, it a couple of songs by Celine Dion. I have mad respect for her vocals. “I Surrender” is super-melodramatic and maybe a little bit corny by some standards, but from a singer’s point of view, the vocals are insane.

The song that made me want to be a star:
I didn’t think I was going to be in the recording business until later- it was more musical theatre- but I remember listening to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” in my living room with a microphone that was a torch.

The song that best represents me as an artist:
The title track off my new album, Trespassing, is a really bold mission statement that sums up what I am trying to be about- being your own person and not making any apologies for it. Being bold and confident and having pride. And being able to look in the mirror and accept things about that are flawed and need work.

“It’s been really interesting kind of crawling into the inner workings of the songs with the band and rehearsing together and talking about the stories that were trying to be communicated and the melodies and hearing about what things worked and didn’t work with the songs when they were being written. It’s been really exciting because I have the originals up there with me and they’re giving me the red light saying ‘hey, why don’t you try this’ or ‘hey, why don’t you try that’.” -Adam Lambert on performing with Queen

“When I started the writing process, my first instinct was to kind of go a little bit darker- I was feeling a bit dark at the time. And my first album was very glam rock, and there were a couple darker songs; but all the imagery, my tour, and everything was lots of feathers and glitter and I kind of wanted to purposefully go in a different direction. So I started writing some kind of moody/emo stuff and working with a couple people, and they were good songs, but I would sit there and listen to them after we were done with demos and play them for friends and it just wasn’t clicking. So then I realized I want dance, I want funk, disco. I was listening to a Daft Punk song and I’m like ‘That’s everything!’ That’s electro! It’s modern but it’s borrowing from dance classics and I wanna figure out how to fuse that for me. And I talked to the label about it and that’s when they suggested Pharrell! And I was like ‘Yeah, if HE’LL work with me!’ I mean, of course I’ll work with him! We got the green light, I flew to Miami, and I’ve told this story a lot but, I didn’t feel cool enough to walk into the studio. I was pretty intimidated, I was  like ‘It’s frickin Pharrell!’ I’m such a fan, and he’s shaped pop music and hip hop over the past decade like crazy. And I did’t know if he was gonna be into what I did… I was like ‘Okay, here we go!’ We started talking about life and music and the industry and being different and having to march forward strongly in spite of certain obstacles, and that’s how the song “Trespassing” was born.” - Adam Lambert

“I just wanted to get back down to what I loved about music, and take my time and write it from a place where I was at home, hanging out with friends, going out, celebrating birthdays, being with family. That’s what music’s all about: celebration. And being back in a normal life for a little bit really helped inspire it.

I think funk is something that’s universal. You know I think funk exists now, today on the radio with dance music. It’s a more modernized version. But if you go back to the classics, disco and funk- it’s timeless. So I really pulled a lot from that because I think anybody, no matter who you are, no matter how old you are, girl, guy…if you’re American, if you’re international, I think everybody loves a good beat.” - Adam Lambert
