                                                MY 19th BIRTHDAY
My birthday this year was so good! But to be honest, I don’t feel any older. Nevertheless, I am another year older. I got to go shopping a few days before my birthday! See, as I get older, I’ve learned it’s best to pick out my gifts so I get exactly what I want. This is one of the perks of being an only child. My parents have always spoiled me and loved me and for that I am grateful. They always go all out on my birthday and make me feel very special!
     This year, on my actual birthday, my Daddy was home. He’s not been home on my birthday in 3 years because of work. We went to lunch at the bakery that made my cake. Then we went to my favorite beyond favorite Christmas store, Salem Creek. They have 2 levels and both are filled with Christmas decor. Also there was hot apple cider that was amazing! I got 2 new Christmas ornaments which will be my Christmas gifts this year. They have huge displays of sweets decorations and ornaments which of course I fell in love with. Then later we met my cousins for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Firebirds. They have THE best ribs I’ve ever had. I love them! We had the cake from the bakery, which no one ate because it was awful. Last year we got a cake from the same bakery and it was much better. But it was really pretty even though it tasted awful. My mom sent them an email to tell them it wasn’t good and they said that sometimes it happens that they have a bad run and they knew there was one but they didn’t know which cakes it was. They were really nice and apologized and gave us a full refund. My mom made me a homemade chocolate cake a few days later that was fabulous! She is so sweet!
     PRESENTS! This year I got a new lamp (which is super pretty and matches my room’s color scheme), 4 new sweets Christmas ornaments for my sweets themed tree, I got new clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister. I got 8 new Pandora charms, an Amazon Kindle $25 gift card, and $20 in cash! The charms are gorgeous and I got 2 that weren’t even on my wish list! Also I should mention that my cat, Powder got really sick in October and the vet didn’t even think he’d make it til my birthday and I’m happy to report that my boy is doing so well! He’s back to his normal self and I couldn’t be happier! I got Powder on my 5th birthday and it was nice to have another birthday together :) If loving a kitty back to health is possible, then we’ve done it. And honestly I could have cared less about presents this year! All I wanted was Powder to get better and he did :)
     I got lots of birthday tweets from my friends on Twitter and hearing from you all made my special day even more wonderful! :)

The 2009 American Idol runner-up and electro-pop rocker, 30, who has released his second album, Trespassing, talks about the songs that have shaped him.

The first song I was obsessed with:
Madonna’s “Vogue” was the biggie for me. I loved how provocative, outspoken and controversial she was. I thought that was fabulous.

My karaoke go-to track:
“Tell Me Something Good” by Rufus and Chaka Khan. For a while there, I loved karaoke. It actually got me over a little bit of stage fright when I was 23, 24.

My guilty pleasure track:
Actually, it a couple of songs by Celine Dion. I have mad respect for her vocals. “I Surrender” is super-melodramatic and maybe a little bit corny by some standards, but from a singer’s point of view, the vocals are insane.

The song that made me want to be a star:
I didn’t think I was going to be in the recording business until later- it was more musical theatre- but I remember listening to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” in my living room with a microphone that was a torch.

The song that best represents me as an artist:
The title track off my new album, Trespassing, is a really bold mission statement that sums up what I am trying to be about- being your own person and not making any apologies for it. Being bold and confident and having pride. And being able to look in the mirror and accept things about that are flawed and need work.

I love it out here! I love the way of life, the attitude is super laid-back and positive.

Your first album showed more of your rock-star persona…
It was dictated by the music I played on [American Idol]. And I really wanted to get my feet wet and try on the persona of a rock star. This one, Trespassing, is a lot more personal.

You’ve used the term stankface when describing the new music. Can you explain its meaning?
If you hear something that has a good groove or is really funky you make face do this scrunched-up look. That’s stankface. The album is very stankface-y!

Rolling Stone magazine said you sing like “Zeus in a thong”. How does that sit with you?
I was, like, thank you! I don’t know what the thong part is about. Do they mean sandals?

What’s up with your blond hair?
I just felt like it. When you do the same thing every time it’s boring.

Your new tattoo means “music soothes the savage beast”. Does it really?
I felt like it made sense to me. When you’re performing or listening to music, your brain goes quiet. Music is almost a form of meditation. It balances. It locks you into a mood.

You had a cameo on Pretty Little Liars. How was that?
Great! It was a Halloween episode and I was playing at a party. I was a glampire. I would love to do more, if it’s the right thing.

There’s a lot of buzz about you doing American Idol…
I think I’m being considered. I’d love the opportunity. It would be cool to come back.

Thoughts on Nicki Minaj doing Idol?
I don’t think that’s been confirmed.
