I’m pretty hard on myself, I’m my own worst critic. It’s part of who I am. And beyond just vanity, I’m hard on myself with a lot of things. It’s helpful. It keeps me working hard and trying for the best and it keeps me wanting to have a high standard, but it can be a bit exhausting. It would have been interesting to have a life where the publicity wasn’t part of what I do but even before going on Idol I was doing theatre and it’s all about people looking. Of course I would love to be a little less vain, it would be a relief, but it’s not part of what I do.”

“Oh man, I dunno. That’s a big question. I dunno. Biggest compliment I’ve ever received… I mean I think kind of what I was talking about before is if a fan is expressing that they are more open-minded or more happy because of something that I did or said or inspired. I mean, I can’t take credit for that but I feel thankful for that. I feel like that’s the best compliment- somebody that their quality of life has improved because of something I did & that’s beautiful. I love that.” -Adam Lambert

“No, it’s not night and day. I mean I’m not doing the Sasha Fierce/Beyonce game. But I definitely think when you’re on stage and there’s all these people looking at you, you have to kind of puff up. There’s definitely a certain amount of expectation there. And that’s part of what you do when you’re on stage. I’ve always loved that experience since I was a kid. I love being on stage and creating. Of course I love the attention. Of course I love creating something for a captive audience. It’s a great feeling.
And then the person that exists off stage is the same person, but he’s not so self-assured. I doubt myself a lot and I second-guess things and I’m in my head a lot. With creating this music, I would get in the studio and write with some people and come with a demo and there was no way for me to walk away and be like ‘oh this is a hit, this is the one.’ I don’t work that way. I’d be wanting to play it for friends and acquaintances and other colleagues and be like ‘what do you think of this? Do you think it’s good? Do you think I should change that part? What do you think about that line?’ I really like to get feedback. I’m a bit fickle actually. I can change my mind really quick about things. So it really helps me to bounce things off of people and that informs my work. And then once the thing is created- the song- and it’s recorded, then it’s a different story. When we’re doing it live on stage, that’s another process. I love it when people say, ‘oh you seem so confident!’ I’m like ‘well, I’m not always that confident.’ It’s something that I work towards. I find confidence in certain things, but there’s a lot of things that take it right out from under me.” -Adam Lambert

“American Idol is kind of a distant memory, it was a while ago now and there’s been so much that’s happened since then. And my perspective has shifted and I’ve grown and changed and grown up a little bit. I think I know where I wanna be as an artist and what I wanna express and what I wanna communicate and what I don’t. So those experiences kind of help inform me.” -Adam Lambert

“Anything with the word ‘gay’ in it is the media’s favorite thing to print, which I’ve learned the hard way. The way I’ve grown into this life and being who I am in the public eye is I’m proud of who I am and it is a part of my identity that I’m very comfortable with and I’ve always been comfortable with it and I’m glad to be unaffected by it, ya know, in the public. For maybe a young gay or lesbian person who’s looking at the TV or magazine and going ‘oh, okay. You don’t have to be scared to be who you are.’ So for that reason, I’m really proud of it. But I do feel like it can be so easily objectified. It’s like I have to qualify it and talk about it all the time and it’s kinda like, until I got into the public eye, I didn’t think twice about it. It wasn’t something that I identified outside of another part of who I was. So, it’s been interesting. It’s been really interesting.” -Adam Lambert

                                                MY 19th BIRTHDAY
My birthday this year was so good! But to be honest, I don’t feel any older. Nevertheless, I am another year older. I got to go shopping a few days before my birthday! See, as I get older, I’ve learned it’s best to pick out my gifts so I get exactly what I want. This is one of the perks of being an only child. My parents have always spoiled me and loved me and for that I am grateful. They always go all out on my birthday and make me feel very special!
This year, on my actual birthday, my Daddy was home. He’s not been home on my birthday in 3 years because of work. We went to lunch at the bakery that made my cake. Then we went to my favorite beyond favorite Christmas store, Salem Creek. They have 2 levels and both are filled with Christmas decor. Also there was hot apple cider that was amazing! I got 2 new Christmas ornaments which will be my Christmas gifts this year. They have huge displays of sweets decorations and ornaments which of course I fell in love with. Then later we met my cousins for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Firebirds. They have THE best ribs I’ve ever had. I love them! We had the cake from the bakery, which no one ate because it was awful. Last year we got a cake from the same bakery and it was much better. But it was really pretty even though it tasted awful. My mom sent them an email to tell them it wasn’t good and they said that sometimes it happens that they have a bad run and they knew there was one but they didn’t know which cakes it was. They were really nice and apologized and gave us a full refund. My mom made me a homemade chocolate cake a few days later that was fabulous! She is so sweet!
PRESENTS! This year I got a new lamp (which is super pretty and matches my room’s color scheme), 4 new sweets Christmas ornaments for my sweets themed tree, I got new clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister. I got 8 new Pandora charms, an Amazon Kindle $25 gift card, and $20 in cash! The charms are gorgeous and I got 2 that weren’t even on my wish list! Also I should mention that my cat, Powder got really sick in October and the vet didn’t even think he’d make it til my birthday and I’m happy to report that my boy is doing so well! He’s back to his normal self and I couldn’t be happier! I got Powder on my 5th birthday and it was nice to have another birthday together :) If loving a kitty back to health is possible, then we’ve done it. And honestly I could have cared less about presents this year! All I wanted was Powder to get better and he did :)
I got lots of birthday tweets from my friends on Twitter and hearing from you all made my special day even more wonderful! :)
Here’s some pictures from my birthday :) Also thanks to all my friends and family for making my 19th birthday so amazing :)
XO

“I think speaking of community- that’s one the main things I like to write about, that I like to cultivate with my fandom. Ya know, a lot of them meet each other and become friends at these concerts. So to me, that’s been the biggest inspiration in what music I wanted to put out there: music that brings people together, music that allows people to see how they’re the same instead of how they’re different, and music that breathes tolerance and celebration and doesn’t shy away from the eccentricities and the things that make us weird and strange, but instead- celebrating them. That’s really important to me.” -Adam Lambert

“Of course fame has changed my life. I mean your reality shifts a little bit. And I think on the plus side, all these opportunities come and I get to do what I love and people know about it and wanna hear more. And then the darker side of it is sometimes it gets overwhelming, sometimes affects your social life a little bit, cause you’re like ‘why do you wanna be friends with me?’ And sometimes too, you just wanna be able to go to the grocery store or go out shopping or go to a restaurant with your family and just be alone. But I’m not complaining cause it’s worth it.” -Adam Lambert

“When I got in the studio with Pharrell, I was super nervous and intimidated. And we started talking about life, and he was asking me some questions, and I was telling him that I felt like an outsider. I didn’t feel like I was a part of the music community and I wanted to be. And I felt like I just wanted to bust in there and do my thing in kind of a rebellious, aggressive way. And in just in life in general. My history’s always felt a little bit like that. I’ve always felt a little bit like on the outskirts of something. I’m always craving a sense of community. So we talked about that and I think he found the way in which he identified with me as being somebody that’s been different or having to kind of prove themselves. Then we wrote ‘Trespassing’ together. And then sonically, he was very much interested in kind of putting me into this early 80’s Queen kind of vibe. He was like ‘that’s where you need to be and it’s gonna be great!’ And it worked out really well! It’s one of my favorite songs on the album, for sure! What I love about it is it’s not trendy. It’s not what you’ve heard on the radio lately. It’s not following a formula and there’s something really refreshing about that and totally terrifying to the record company. But it’s a great song, regardless if it’s commercially successful or not, artistically I think it makes a big impact.” -Adam Lambert

“I think one of the things that’s always a challenge for me personally, is to turn my brain off. I think a lot. I’m always thinking, thinking, thinking. One of the keys to really being in the right fame of mind for singing, is to not think so much. So I guess it’s really not a frame of mind, but it’s a frame of spirit and heart and soul. It’s trying to kind of detach from all the inner voices that go on in your head and your conscience and your self-awareness. It’s just tuning into the music. And there’s a peace in that. There’s a real peace in that detachment from all the noise. And now I sound crazy, but it’s really true. It’s the one time where you can go with the flow and be in the moment, that’s what music’s about.” -Adam Lambert
